5 Creative Solutions for More Storage in a Small House
Often small houses don’t have much storage or closet space, so today I’m sharing 5 creative ways to add more storage in a small house.
In order for our family of five to stay organized in our 1250 sq ft home, I knew it would be important to have designated places to keep our things. So while we were renovating, we intentionally planned out and created practical storage solutions to make the most of our limited space.
Add More Storage in a Small House:
1. Hidden Cabinet

We maximized an unused corner in the sun room by putting a cabinet into the wall that backs up to the kitchen. Essentially we just turned a kitchen cabinet around and made it accessible in the sun room. It’s the perfect spot for us to store things like extra bed linens and beach towels.

2. Wall Cabinet

One of my absolute favorite things we did was use the shallow wall space in our kitchen for a built-in medicine cabinet. In past homes, I’ve had a hard time finding a convenient location to store all of our medicine, vitamins, supplements, and essential oils. I love having an easily accessible spot right in the kitchen. If you don’t need to store medicine, then a built-in wall cabinet would be the perfect spot to keep spices, cooking oils, or baking supplies.

3. Utility Closet
I knew I wanted a designated spot to store things like the ironing board, broom, dust pan, and toilet paper. So we re-purposed an old, inefficient wall cabinet and turned it into a utility closet. There’s even enough room to keep our stick vacuum in there when we’re not using it. I love that I can close the closet doors and it keeps everything hidden, tidy, and organized.
Tiny Tip: If possible, add an outlet in the utility closet to plug in things like your dust buster and rechargeable vacuum batteries.

4. Laundry Closet
When we bought out home, the washer and dryer were located in the garage, which was not ideal. So I was extremely excited when our contractor said there was enough space to incorporate a small stack-able laundry closet in our kitchen next to the refrigerator. I love the convenience of being able to do our laundry right in the kitchen.
Tiny Tip: Build the closet deep enough so that the washer door can be left slightly open in-between washes. This allows it to dry out and prohibits mold growth.

5. Custom Closet Systems
We don’t have much closet space in any of the bedrooms in this house, so in order to get the most usable space out of each closet, we designed and installed IKEA closet systems. By planning out the space intentionally, we were able to fit our clothes and shoes in the limited space we have. These closet systems have also allowed us to go without dressers in the kids’ rooms.

If you’re in need of creative storage solutions, I hope you found some inspiration here. But remember that the first step to organizing, especially in a small home, is always purging the things you don’t need. And you may even find that you don’t actually need more storage solutions, you may just need less stuff! Remember, “Owning less is better than organizing more.” (Joshua Becker)

I love all of the “hidden” areas in your home. My favorite is the utility closet! I wish mine had a plug!!!
