Fastest and Best Organizing Tip
“The easiest way to organize your stuff is to get rid of most of it.” -the Minimalists
Purge Your Things
When I get overwhelmed with the state of my home, I usually begin getting it back in order by tossing things into the trash and into the donate box. And instantly, my home feels better. It is the cheapest, easiest, and fastest answer to an overwhelming, messy, or unorganized home. Running out to buy baskets and bins to organize it all is not the immediate answer. Stuffing it all back into closets and drawers isn’t the answer either.
The answer to overwhelm is less! And this doesn’t just apply to your home, it applies to almost everything…your schedule, your kids’ schedules, your commitments, everything! So grab a big box (for donations) and a big trash bag (for trash!) and start filling them up. If you have kids, have them help. They might surprise you with what they’re willing to get rid of.
And if you have things of real monetary value, set them aside and sell them on Craigslist. But if they don’t sell after a few weeks, don’t hold on to them. Let your stuff go. You bless and benefit others when you donate and you unburden yourself. It’s a win win situation. It benefits no one if you hold on to it just because you think it’s valuable and someone should pay you for it. In the end, you’re the one still paying for it with a cluttered, over-whelming house.
There really is more freedom and peace on the other side of letting things go. But you have to be a little bit (or a lot) brave and ruthless to get there!
